personality:
ambition and cunning have always been driving forces in stefan's life; certainly he would not have formed such a powerful coven had he not been in possession of those particular qualities, nor would he have been able to maintain hold of it, with the equal efforts of his partner vladimir, and the other original members. intelligent, or at least intelligent enough to live long enough to become a vampire ancient, stefan nevertheless possesses a bit of a reckless streak when it comes to the vengeance he longs to wreak on the volturi, whom he blames (and rightfully so) for the destruction of his coven and the loss of his mate. his thirst for that vengeance often manifests in caustic comments and sadistic descriptions of how he would like to kill them, which he has no problem recounting to those around them, should the topic arise.
among these things, stefan is also arrogant, with a sense of humour that often teeters on inappropriate, insofar as casual jokes and remarks to young children about tearing the eyes of the his enemies out go. it was, of course, this same arrogance, as well as the arrogance of his fellow coven mates, that would eventually lead to the downfall of the original Romanian coven in Dacia, sending stefan and vladimir on the run, their instincts sharpening as they kept moving, never staying in one place for very long.
despite his closeness with vladimir as well their very similar personalities--many find their voices indistinguishable from each other's--stefan is the quieter of the two, though he is also the one more likely to leap first at a perceived threat, being more reckless and impatient than his coven mate and fellow leader; however, despite this, he's grown protective over vladimir, having travelled with him for so very long. though he longs for vengeance, he would not knowingly try anything that would put his fellow leader's life in danger, or his own, as vladimir is the only vampire he trusts; consequentially, he even learned to control his strong survival instinct when driven by his vengeance, and fully acknowledges that, without vladimir, he would have gone crazy and died a long, long time ago.
he takes much pleasure in living, knowing that, while he does, it causes the volturi strife.

history:
many stories, perhaps, start with a "once upon a time", but sSefan's started with nothing more than a wail in the night, solo against the solitary night. but Stefan's human life, so long ago, back before the Germanic Gothic tribes felled the mighty Roman Empire, was something fleeting; something he barely remembers before his rebirth as a vampire.
turned at the age of twenty-seven, Stefan was once part of a much smaller coven of vampires, one of many covens who were constantly fighting each other for rule of the areas of early Europe they inhabited. it was there he rose to the rank of leader within his own small coven, one of only twelve to gain a secure, powerful footing, leading them into many battles against their rivals in the hopes of gaining more territory in which to hunt. it was over the course of these battles that the coven leaders began to realise that they could become more powerful joined together, annexing any resisting covens, and therefore increasing their power and influence across the area they governed.
and so a tentative proposal was issued by Vladimir, one of the other leaders.
for the first time, the leaders of the twelve covens would meet together in uncertain peace: Iuliana, Oana, Ecaterina, Anca, Sorina, Beniamin, Stefan, Dragomir, Cezar, Vladimir, Ghenadie, and Silviu. it was there, in a stone quarry under the half-light of dawn, that a pact was made and a contract signed in words and vows by all: they would join together, and they would combine their forces in a power grasp the likes of which had never been witnessed before in the vampire world.
at first, the peace was a shaky thing, and many arguments broke out among the new leaders. once or twice one of them would threaten to leave, shattering the unified illusion the ten worked to preserve, and it was only through the intervention of more level-headed members such as Vladimir and Silviu that vampires like Cezar and Anca agreed to stay in. Stefan, for his part, was mostly content to watch these struggles with an errant smirk on his face, though he eventually began to form close relationships with the other leaders, among them Vladimir and the female leader Iuliana.
eventually, their coven, dubbed the "Romanian" coven, grew to a massive size, so much so that they were able to stay in a fixed location, Dacia, where they erected a castle, and had no problems admitting to the people they ruled over exactly what they were: vampires, so confident in their power, in their brute strength capacity, that the thought of having to hide that identity from the weak and squabbling human population felt ridiculous. even so, they never fed within Dacia, choosing instead of hunt outside the population.
the Romanians, in further moves that had yet to be seen, began to amass a personal guard, with emphasis on the brute strength of their members. it was during this time that Stefan fell in love with fellow leader Iuliana, whose strength and fire he could not help but admire.
a strong figure within the ten leaders, Iuliana had shown herself to be more than capable of dealing with anything that came her way. strong in personality and intelligent in nature, she was known for her well-thought, if not blunt decisions, and Stefan often teased her about her inability to be diplomatic in any situation.
"we rule the largest coven in the world, love," she would often reply. "what need have we for diplomacy at this point?"
his relationship with the other leaders, Vladimir included, strengthened as well, for finally they had become the united front they pretended for so long. with their impressive guard-like entity, they had no cause to fear that they would ever fall prey to any of the lesser covens, or the plots of another ambitious vampire. they scorned those with gifts in favour of those with physical prowess, and life couldn't have been better.
but it was this arrogance that would eventually lead to their downfall.
in a war that lasted centuries, the Romanians fought against the vampire Aro and his coven of gifted vampires. their castles burning around them, the remaining Romanians attempted one final stand in the throne room, with only four of the original twelve leaders still standing. Stefan's mate, Iuliana, was the first to declare that she would not sit and boy to these "arrogant Italian scum!", and in a brash decision, so like her, she and fellow surviving leader Anca lead an assault against the Volturi forces while Stefan and Vladimir fought the Volturi gifteds in another of their castles.
Stefan, Vladimir, and Vladimir's mate Lenuta arrived back at the main fortress to find the rest of their coven in ruins, the bodies of the fallen left to burn in the ruins of their once-great castle. grief-stricken, Stefan fell into a rage, howling the loss of his mate, whose body Vladimir hid from him in an attempt to lessen the sorrow. his hatred for the Volturi cemented, Stefan, Vladimir and Lenuta fled the ruins of their once-great coven.
inconsolable, Stefan snarled his intent to avenge Iuliana and the others who had fallen to "the Volturi dogs" and, with a smirk on his face, Vladimir agreed. all the while watching as the Volturi copied and strengthened their previous way of life, Vladimir and Stefan began to plot their next moves against the Volturi, but in their quest for vengeance against their fallen family they again overlooked Aro's appreciation for "gifted" vampires.
finally, after amassing an army of over one-hundred vampires, both newly turned and veteran, the three of them--Stefan, Vladimir, and Lenuta--geared up for a final assaut that they believed would wipe the Volturi from the face of the earth they had once ruled. leading the new army, as Iuliana once had, was Vladimir's mate Lenuta, who promised nothing but victory, in her calm way. Stefan and Vladimir, in anticipation for a full-scale Volturi retreat, hastened to prepare a trap to wipe out any remaining survivors.
it was this arrogance that allowed them to escape the full-scale slaughter of their army, and of Vladimir's mate, and they could only watch in horror as the Volturi's two newest and shiniest recruits, "Witch Twins" by the names of Alec and Jane, incapacitated their entire army, allowing for the systematic slaughter of the Volturi. Lenuta, left until the end, was the focus of Jane's "burning" gift, and Stefan had to hold Vladimir back with all his strength as her screams cut through the air before she was finally beheaded and burned by the Volturi guard.
Stefan and Vladimir escaped on foot after that, and though there were others who had escaped the Volturi slaughter--those who had been smart and fled when Alec's mist first started to cut through the ranks--the two never tried to find them. it was a solace for them, in a way, the fact that the Volturi had never been able to truly wipe out the Romanians, though they were now permanently on the run, and grieving for the loss of everything they had known and loved.
they swore then, without words, that they would always stay together, and they began moving all over, never staying in one place too long. for around one-thousand years they ran, and in those thousand years they grew close, trusting naught but each other. every few centuries Aro would send Demetri and a few others after the remaining Romanians, so Stefan and Vladimir learned to stay on their toes, always alert, though the Volturi never deemed them a large enough threat and so, therefore, allowed them to remain alive.
they have been on the run for a thousand years, every day fantasising about the day when someone new will challenge the Volturi's leadership, and imagining what it will be like to stop running. and they swear they will be there for that, no matter what.
