personality:
ambitious, vengeful, and driven--as stefan is--by the desire to see the Volturi fall and crumble to fits at his feet, vladimir has spent his immortal life both in senseless revelry and power and on the whip-end of that power. with a personality much similar to stefan's, as the two of them have had naught but each other's company as constants for centuries upon centuries, vladimir is nevertheless the more vocal of the two, and while stefan is more mocking with his mannerisms, vladimir is far more dismissive and sarcastic. he also has a hair's width more patience than his companion, though both enjoy fondly discussing what part of the volturi guard they'd like to rip to shreds with their bare hands first.
incredibly intelligent, both vladimir and stefan have learned the lesson of arrogance, though both tends to fall prey to it from time to time, as evidenced in how they act. vladimir is incapable of letting go of the past, stemming from just how much he lost, though the loss of his mate in his and stefan's second attempt against the Volturi has made him more careful in choosing his battles, certainly moreso than stefan, whom he often has to remind to be calm.
still, he can't resist the urge to rile the occasional individual, and will not hesitate to do so. he doesn't trust anyone but stefan, and he prefers it that way.

history: believe it or not, this is the far more detailed history of the volturi, and i didn't use any copy-and-paste from stefan's application. it's a new and better read ;3 i'm quite proud.
the first surviving child born to Doria Christenel in late 1200 B.C.E., Vladimir's life was better than most of the early tribes and groups living around, due to the status his father had in their particular civilisation as a great warrior. while the Assyrians rose to power elsewhere in the world, eventually conquering even the formidable empire of Egypt, Vladimir learned to fight and hunt, and how to defend his village from pillaging outsiders. born during the European Bronze Age, Vladimir's family never lacked for weapons, and were considered one of the strongest around, for though his father had died before he was born, his mother had proven to be a fierce warrior in her own right.
Vladimir's human life, however, came to an abrupt end when he was approached by a strange foreigner, gilded in gold. a wayfarer from Egypt, he changed Vladimir and left, leaving him to figure out everything on his own and leave his immediate area to find others like him. he did (with surprising ease and no small amount of utter calm), and within a short span of years he was the head of a large-for-the-time coven of vampires, which slowly began to move forward and seize territory from other vampires. using his previous life experiences, Vladimir won more land for his coven, rising them up to be a formidable force, large enough to begin leeching more territory from small, individual vampires.
it was then that other large-for-the-time covens began to assemble in the area, drawn by the vast expanses of land Bronze Age Europe began to offer, free from the struggles of the Middle East, where the three large empires of the Hittites, Egyptians and Assyrians formed a delicate triumvirate in an attempt to balance their vast powers.
it was those three empires that first gave Vladimir an idea that would eventually lead to the formation of the Romanian covens.
after more battles and squabbles for territories against the twelve other large covens that had begun to form, Vladimir called for a temporary peace, explaining that he had a way that would enable all of them an equal share in the lands provided to them, while subsequently boosting their influence and power far beyond what they could perceive. the other leaders, wary but willing to hear him out, gathered under a circle of stones their respective cultures found sacred, and it was there Vladimir laid out his idea: the twelve of them would group together and form one large coven in a power move never before seen in the vampire world, and then none would be able to stand against them.
the eleven other leaders--Iuliana, Oana, Ecaterina, Anca, Sorina, Beniamin, Stefan, Cezar, Dragomir, Ghenadie, and Silviu--were understandably wary of the plan at first, easy to suspect that the others would betray them and take them down when their backs were turned, but it was the leader of the southernmost coven, Stefan, who had stepped in at that point, subduing their fears somewhat more. he was the first to agree to Vladimir's plan, followed tentatively by Sorina, Oana, Silviu, Beniamin, Ghenadie, Ecaterina, Anca, Dragomir, Iuliana, and finally Cezar.
of course, the peace was shaky at first, and most of their efforts were spent trying not to whirl around at the smallest crack of a branch, but to the other covens they presented a united front--and a threat. it wasn't long before other covens and lone nomads began flocking to them, and the twelve leaders, dubbed the Romanian coven, for the area they lived in, decided to form a guard-like entity composed of physically strong vampires to intimidate others that would try to stand against them.
it was this focus on brute strength, so revelled by the Romanians, that would eventually lead to their downfall.
but until then, the Romanians ruled absolute, their authority unchallenged by all. they were like gods, and they lived in brazen decadence. no expense was spared; nothing could be too grand for them. they eventually rose passed the need to hide themselves from humans, and as the Bronze Age gave way to the Iron Age, paving way for more advanced man-made civilisations to form. villages eventually gave way to cities, and none was more feared than the Romanian city of Dacia, where the coven based their main castle, though they had plenty others on the side. ruling for one-thousand years, unchallenged, they had no fear of the humans knowing what they were, for what harm could they do? any uprising against them by the humans was quickly and effortlessly crushed, the people witnessing their "beautiful demonic overlords" in action, descending to feast vicariously on the lifesblood of all who opposed them.
those who threw down their weapons would have the change of being spared. if the Romanians themselves were sufficiently amused, they would even bestow the gift of immortality upon a lucky few, increasing their strength. for thousands of miles in every direction they were feared.
then news of a new coven, the Volturi, began to reach their ears.
in their arrogance, the Romanians dismissed the Volturi as a threat. at one point, Vladimir had even tilted his head to his fellow leaders, a silver goblet of blood spilling out of his hands (much to his amusement; the colour of blood on stone was one of his favourites) as he said, "what threat can a coven too scared to admit their existence to humans pose to us?"
further scoffing at the Volturi's belief that their vampirism should be hidden behind the rising Christian beliefs, the Romanians dismissed the threat, believing themselves untouchable in their hedonistic sports.
Vladimir continued to spend his days with the rest of the twelve leaders, forming closer relationships with some and base acquaintanceships with others. among those befriended first was Stefan, the first to agreed with his plan, and Stefan's mate Iuliana, one of the other twelve coven leaders--and one of the most hot-tempered out of all of them, though Vladimir could not doubt her ferocity when dealing with enemies.
Vladimir's own mate came from one of the smaller tribes that later approached the Volturi, having travelled all the way from Egypt to join their ranks. lead by a man who preferred to go by the name of Khepri. in the tales told from his country, Khepri was one of Ra's lesser subordinates, but was also associated with rebirth, which he said he gave to others by transforming them into vampires like himself. one of the vampires in his three-person group was an Egyptian woman simply referred to as "Nefer"--beautiful--and Vladimir found himself oddly intrigued by the woman, whom he later claimed "had a most intriguing fire burning in her eyes. Stefan, I do believe I shall call her Lenuta." Torch.
with Lenuta as his mate and his final, the twelve original rulers continued to preside over their coven for another three-hundred years until, in a move they did not foresee, the Volturi--with their gifted vampires, so scorned by the Romanians only a century or two earlier--began a war against the Romanians that would last centuries. cities were burned as the two covens clashed against each other, the brute strength of the Romanians allowing them to maintain a balance against the gifted by fewer-in-number Volturi vampires; however, it did not last. the first of the twelve leaders killed, Beniamin, was reported to have died with a sorrowful smile on his face as the forces he lead were eventually overpowered and slaughtered, the Volturi vampires marching on to where impatient leader Cezar and serious, solemn leader Dragomir were positioned, taking them by surprise. Sorina was next, her small frame easily broken as her guard fell, and her death was followed by the destruction of two Volturi castles, with another leader, Ghenadie, trapped inside.
genuinely worried, and grieving over the loss of their coven mates, the remaining of the original twelve leaders--Stefan, Vladimir, Iuliana, Cezar, Ecaterina, Oana, and Silviu--tried to think of a plan. eventually, on Vladimir's suggestion, they sent Silviu out with an entourage of some of their best guards and a warning, hoping that his calm and serene personality and appearance would pacify the Volturi. it didn't, and Silviu was slaughtered, prompting Ecaterina to snarl out a cry of revenge as she and Oana rallied more forces of their own to combat the Volturi rats. they managed to defeat a section of them after a long time fighting, but were eventually overcome and perished in the burning fields they had ruled for a millennia long.
with only four of the original twelve leaders left, their castles and their empire burning around them, Iuliana declared that she and Anca would attempt a stand in the throne room of the main castle keep while Vladimir, Stefan and Vladimir's mate Lenuta went to try and secure one of the outermost castles. they succeeded, after a long and bloody battle, but when they returned to the main fortress they were met with only slaughter, the bodies of their coven members lying twisted on the stone floor, decapitated heads twisted into final snarls of defiance. that was how Stefan eventually found his mate, Iuliana, her body badly charred by the fires that had ripped through and destroyed the rich tapestries that had once flown boldly on the walls.
flying into a rage, Stefan snarled his intention to get revenge--that he would beat those "Italian scum" into the ground and they would be shown no mercy, they will die like the dog they are, and in those moments before darkness i will make them wish i was a more merciful master!--and it took the combined strengths of Vladimir and Lenuta to rip him from his fallen mate and their former friend, fleeing the remains of their castle with the Volturi laughing victoriously behind them.
the Romanians had been defeated, after centuries of fighting, leaving only Vladmir, Stefan, Lenuta, and a select few stragglers in their midst.
promising Stefan the revenge he sought with naught but an airy smirk on his face, Vladmir sat down and, with Stefan, began plotting various assaults on the Volturi, all small-scale attempts which failed as they watched the Volturi copy key aspects of the Romanians' coven structure: the establishment of a guard, gifted this time, being only one of the similarities. the main difference, however, was that the Volturi chose to hide from their much weaker prey, which enraged the remaining Romanians.
finally, gearing up for a final assault which they hoped would take down the much smaller Volturi guard once and forever, Stefan and Vladimir amassed a massive army of more than one-hundred vampires, both new and old, thinking that even with their gifts the Volturi would have an impossible time defeating them all.
but they hadn't known that, just ten years earlier, the Volturi had added two new and very dangerous weapons to their pile: twins vampires, still young in their human and vampiric years, by the names of Jane and Alec.
and so, around 810 C.E., with Vladimir's mate leading the newly formed Romanian army, they confronted the Volturi, Lenuta promising a quick and easy victory as Stefan and Vladimir left to plan a surprise attack for the anticipated Volturi retreat, ensuring that this defeat would be their final one. it was to their horror that, as they moved back to spy on the Volturi, they saw nothing but the Volturi guard slaughtering the unlucky majority who didn't have the sense to turn tail and flee--those at the back ranks who had enough time to escape Alec's gift--and, to Vladimir's horror, he saw Lenuta at the front, snarling, left untouched by the male Witch Twin's strange gift, until her body abruptly convulsed in shuddering pain and a scream of torture was ripped from her throat. Stefan had to pull Vladimir away at that point, making him avert his eyes until the Lenuta's screaming was abruptly cut short.
grief-stricken, Vladimir fought his friend before abruptly going numb, allowing Stefan to convince him to flee and not look back.
"we are all that is left now, my friend," Stefan had said grimly, sparing not a glance for the carnage of their final defeat. "but while we live, we can plot. the Volturi may discount us as threats now, but when their shoulders relax too much, we will be there to rip the heads straight from their bodies."
for centuries the two travelled on their own afterwards, growing closer and closer, learning to depend on and trust no one else. shortly after the religious wars in England they ran into Carlisle, sticking around long enough to form an acquaintanceship, before they took off again. after all, while the Volturi didn't regard them as a true threat, and they had done an enviable job of disappearing from sight, that didn't stop the Volturi from sending their tracker, Demetri, and a few other lesser ranking guards after them every few centuries, if only to keep them on their toes.
when news of the Volturi assembling against Carlisle Cullen's coven--dubbed the Olympic coven by the others--Stefan and Vladimir showed up, heavily unannounced, to offer their support. when the assault failed to go through, they left in disappointment, having revealed themselves to the Volturi, which they knew had been a dangerous move on their parts. they redoubled their efforts to remain hidden after that, and have been quiet ever since, though they are still willing to jump at any opportunity to afford the Volturi some harm.
they've waited a thousand years, after all, and they'll wait a thousand more if they have to.
