Personality :: Carlisle is one of the most compassionate people, he finds human life precious which is why he practiced drinking the blood of animals and using his experience and abilities to help people. Carlisle has a very accepting, kind and peaceful nature which has helped him to make many friends vampires from a wide variety of Covens, humans and even werewolves too. The unknown is something that fascinates Carlisle greatly he enjoys reading and studying he can normally be seen with a book in hand when he is not working, he wishes to expand his knowledge as much as possible to help as many people as he can. Using his gifts and abilities to help other people is what truly makes Carlisle happy, he understands that people view vampires as evil, but by helping he feels he is slowly beginning to dispel this rumour.
Despite the fact that in his human life Carlisle hunted werewolves, vampires and witches he has grown more peaceful in his time as a vampire, he will always seek peace over war, but will fight if he has to protect his family which are the most important thing to him. Carlisle is a very patient and nonjudgemental character making him a perfect father figure for his adopted children, he has always been the one to settle arguments and help each of his children with their own individual struggles.

History ::[/i] Carlisle had a very different childhood to most people, his mother died giving birth to him and his father was an Anglican Pastor in a time of religious disturbances. His father constantly hunted down witches, werewolves and vampire believing he would be removing sins from the world and as his father grew older Carlisle was encouraged to take over his father legacy, even though most times they did not catch the creatures and ended up murdering innocent women and children. It worried Carlisle that they may be killing innocent people and he was not as set on killing as his father was, on one particular night he located a real coven of vampires in the sewers of London, a raid was lead to kill these vampires and in the chaos Carlisle was attacked, bitten and left to die. He managed to hide himself in a cellar for protection during the painful transformation into a vampire, but was disgusted at what he had become and tried for many months to kill himself with a variety of methods including starvation and throwing himself of cliffs, he did not want to be a monster and go around killing. After awhile he became desperate for blood and attacked a passing herd of deer, he discovered that he could survive from the blood of animals.
With the knowledge he could survive from the blood of animals Carlisle began to make himself a new life traveling and perfect his ability to resist the bloodlust caused by humans, he also became a nighttime patron of the arts and studied medicine, literature and art allowing him to become a brilliant doctor very quickly. During his studies in Italy Carlisle came across the Volturi led by Aro, Marcus and Caius, he longed for some companionship since he had been along for so long, it was this that led him to stay with Volturi for several decades using their libraries to better of his knowledge of medicine and learn about the rules that governed Vampires. Soon he grew tired of their attempts to convert him back to vampires natural food source and he disliked Aro's disregard for human life, an example of this could be when he found a particularly bloody corpse outside the library where he was studying placed their to test his self control. When the New World was discovered Carlisle left the Volturi on good terms with the leaders to start a new life where he could use his knowledge of medicine to help others.
It was during his time working as a doctor in Columbus that he first met his wife to be Esme Anne Platt she had broken her leg falling out of a tree and upon meeting her he felt a strong attraction that he could not really explain. He put it down to the fact that he was lonely with nothing to do but work and study these feelings increased over the years Carlisle had considered creating a mate of his own, but did not like the idea of cursing someone to a life like his. After moving around again Carlisle found himself working shifts in a hospital in Chicago during the outbreak of Spanish Flu, it was here that he met Elizabeth Masen who was dying of the flu along with her son Edward, the dying woman begged Carlisle to do anything possible to save her son. Due to his loneliness and the pain he had seen Elizabeth in at the thought of her son dying Carlisle changed Edward into a vampire, the two of them travelled together using the story that Edward was the younger brother of Carlisle's late wife. A few years after this Carlisle found Esme again he was called to her bedside she wad dying from self inflicted wounds, he discovered she had lost her son and tried to kill herself. It hurt him to see her in so much pain remembering the positive, happy young lady he had met before he also changed her into a vampire to save her life. Later when he explained what had happened to her, he was surprised that she was not angry at what had happened it seemed that she too remembered the first time they met and was happy to see him again. They soon fell in love and were married, they began to use the story that Edward was their adopted son to make his presence in their family more believable.
Some time after this Carlisle found a young woman Rosalie, who had been raped and almost killed in the street, he turned her into a Vampire to save her from death and also hoped she could offer some companionship to Edward, but that was not so and they had more of a sibling relationship and Rosalie became his adopted daughter. Not long after this Carlisle was begged by Rosalie to turn a young man called Emmett who had been mauled by a bear, Rosalie had carried him a long way to bring him back for Carlisle to change him. Seeing the pleading look in Rosalie's face and understanding that she had not chosen the life he had given her as a vampire he turned Emmett to make up for changing her and Emmett became another son in his family. The growing family moved around a lot the group moved to Forks and struck up a treaty with a Quileute tribe of werewolves that ruled the area, the treaty was that The Cullens would not kill humans to feed of or to change and they would not trespass on Quileute land in turn they would not reveal their secret to the humans and they would leave them alone. Striking up this treaty relaxed Carlisle knowing that they would always have a place of security where they could remain hidden, after traveling around again they were found by Mary Alice Brandon and Jasper Whitlock, they had been searching for his coven for a long time using Alice's ability of seeing the future. Fascinated by her abilities and both of their eagerness to join Carlisle was more than happy to extend his family and accept them he already felt a deep connection to Alice based on how much she knew about them and their future, he also accepted Jasper understanding his difficult past and how he was trying to change his future. Jasper and Rosalie with their similar features posed as twins under Jasper's surname Hale, whilst Mary became Alice Cullen.
The family moved back to Forks as this was where they felt most comfortable and at home, with his medical ability Carlisle had no problem getting a job at Forks Hospital and within a year became the chief doctor. Since he had been working as a doctor for almost three hundred years now money was something the family did not have to worry about and they moved into a secluded house just a little away from the main town of Forks. When Edward saved a new girl Bella Swan from being crushed by an out of control van, Carlisle was initially worried about the threat she could pose to their secret but he treated her injuries and stopped his family members who were hell bent on killing her. He watched as Edward fell in love and Bella reciprocated his feelings, which brought some peace to Carlisle who had observed his sons loneliness for too long and wanted him to be happy. When another coven of vampires came to Forks one of which decided to hunt Bella, Carlisle took control of the situation organizing away of protecting Bella and her father Charlie, as well as distracting James with a different scent. This plan however failed and James still managed to find Bella and bite her, however Carlisle helped Edward to find the strength to suck the venom out, they then formulated an excuse that Bella had fallen down a few flights of stairs and had thus broken a few bones, with James ripped to shreds and the pieces burnt Carlisle was glad peace had returned to their home and that Bella was safe.
When Jasper accidentally attacked Bella due to a paper-cut she received from opening a present on her birthday, Carlisle treated the wounds Bella had sustained when Edward pushed her through some glass to protect her from Jasper. Understanding his son's fears and doubts that Bella would get hurt if they remained in her life Carlisle agreed to have the family more to Lthaca, here he worked night shifts at a hospital and also taught part time. These were difficult times for the family with Edward's conflicting feelings about Bella and Jasper blaming himself for everything that had happened to the family. Carlisle came home from work one day to find both Edward and Alice gone he came to understand that Edward was going to the Volturi to have himself killed because he believed Bella to be dead, Alice had gone to prevent Edward from going through with his plans. Despite his want to follow his family he knew that he could not make it in time to reason with his old friends and he had to trust the Alice could get there in time to save him which thankfully she did. After greeting Edward, Alice and Bella at the airport when they arrived home Carlisle was relieved to see his family safe, he did not like being so close to loosing any of them, hearing the Volturi's decision about turning Bella into a vampire due to her knowledge of their world, Carlisle cast his vote to change her he had seen the impact she had on Edward's life and he could not bare the thought of loosing his son again, he already considered Bella another daughter in his family.
Soon after this the family moved back to Forks, where a string of murders was beginning to spread across Seattle, it is suspect to be a newborn army lead by Victoria who is seeking vengeance on the Cullens especially Bella and Edward for killing James. Due to Jacob Blacks affections for Bella, Carlisle and the Quileute wolves manage to form a temporary alliance in order to help protect Bella, they took turns guarding her house and father giving the Cullens a chance to hunt. The Cullens plan on going to Seattle to deal with the newborns before it gets out of control, however this plan changes when Alice's sees the newborns going after them instead, since Jasper has so much experience with fighting newborns he teaches the Cullens and Werewolves the best way to fight him. Though Carlisle felt uneasy about starting a fight he understood that this was the only way to protect his family and agrees to fight, the Cullens and the Quileute werewolves end up winning the battle and Victoria is killed by Edward ending any further attempts to kill Bella. When Jacob is hurt protecting Leah Carlisle helps as best as he can to treat Jacob since they can not take him to a doctor, he orders the Quilete wolfs to take Jacob back home where he can threat them later as Alice warns him the Volturi are going to arrive to find out what happened to the Newborns. During the battle Carlisle refuses to kill a young newborn Bree Tanner who pleaded with him explaining that she did not want to fight them, he also convinces everyone else to let her live even though the risk she posses. When the Volturi arrive they are surprised to see the family still alive and issue a warning from Aro about Bella's position as a human still, they also refuse to let Bree live ignoring Carlisle this angers Carlisle, who still dislikes the Volturi's eagerness to kill. Carlisle was saddened when the killed Bree, but she seemed happy that they had at least given her a chance and been kind to her. Carlisle ended up going back to the Black household where he had to re-break Jacob's injuries as the bones had regrown and healed crooked, whilst he his treating Jacob he takes a blood sample which he test later fascinated by the genetic make up of werewolves
Carlisle attended Edward and Bella's wedding pleased to finally see his son find someone to spend the rest of his life with and glad that now he does not have to be alone. He also allows edward to use his wedding gift to Esme as their honeymoon place which is an island called Isle Esme, Alice however see's something in Bella's future and it turns out that Bella is pregnant, Carlisle does his best to speak to Bella and calm her down so he can understand what is going on, he is the person that gives the diagnosis that she is pregnant. The two of them are forced to cut the honeymoon sort and come home to Forks so Carlisle can abort the child, something that he is unsure about knowing that the baby is some form of hybrid he knows that carrying it could kill Bella, he would have gone along with aborting the baby, but Esme was against the decision and Carlisle did not want to go against her wishes understanding that she had once lost a child he also did not want to further the argument. When Bella gives birth to Renesmee Carlisle see's that the decision that was made was best and grows attached to the newborn baby happy with the way she makes everyone happier, Jacob also imprints on Renesmee which is something Carlisle is not to angry about understanding it is an natural process it also causes the Cullens and Quileute wolves to finally make peace with one another. Carlisle immediately grows concerned when Alice warns the Volturi are coming for them because they were misinformed about Renesmee and believe her to be an immortal child. Believing a fight is going to happen Carlisle begins to look for his old friends and fellow vampires to stand with him and his family against the Volturi, to serve as witnesses to Renesmee growing proving she is not an immortal child. With the battle approaching Alice and Jasper disappear leaving a message with the werewolf Sam for Carlisle, there is no proper explanation and though Carlisle is saddened by their departure he trusts his children, he also understands the great interest that Aro has in Alice's power and wants her to be safe from him.
Carlisle gathers together friends from the Denali, Egyptian, Irish, Amazon, Romanian and French Coven's along with a few nomad Vampires he befriended many years ago. When the Volturi arrive they Aro is surprised by the news that Renesmee is a hybrid, but Carlsile knows he is looking for a fight the Cullens have stood in their way for awhile and amongst the vampires they have collected are a few very valuable vampires that he wants to get his hands on for their abilities. Aro tries to prove that they can not prove that Renesmee is not a danger, which is when Alice arrives back with Jasper and another hybrid they had found and Carlisle understands now why that had left and also why they had chosen not to tell anyone. Alice shows Aro a vision of the future showing what will happen if violence does occur, in this vision Carlisile is killed in a face of against Aro when he tries to take Alice against her will and threatens to hurt Jasper. After seeing this vision the Volturi leave and there is peace between them again, in a later discussion with the other covens they suspect that the Volturi may try to avenge their humiliation again and they all agree to stand together if this time comes.
Fifty years have passed since then and after moving about the Cullens returned to Forks which is their true home and Carlisle quickly takes up his old position as chief doctor at the hospital however due to the time they have been away nobody recognises him and they start their life again.

There was an obvious sense of pleasure on the look of the Romanian's as Carlisle spoke about rethinking his friendship with Aro he could see the look on their faces and he had to admit it was peculiar seeing them pleased about something. Still they were right Aro had come to the Cullens looking for a fight a reason to kill and make of with the most powerful, someone like that deserved no friendship from him and Aro would have to work extremely hard to get back the friendship they had once had. "I considered Aro a friend due to our history I guess it takes another persons perspective to see the truth about someone sometimes" He answered to their questions and concerns about how long it had taken for him to view Aro as an enemy, but Carlisle had always considered his friend to be a threat ever since his interest in Edward an Alice's ability unlike the Romanian's he had spent time in the Volturi Coven he knew how Aro acted, how he responded to situations Carlisle knew him better than most people. They continued on to talk about the flaws in the Volturi ones that Carlisle knew where there it was possible one day the Volturi would overstep their authority and try to make slaves of them all, there was no stopping Aro's quest for power if this did happen though Carlisle would again stand against him this he knew.
Vladimir went on to talk about the time back when the Romanian's ruled and Carlisle nodded "I agree with you on the point that Aro is not honest with his intention, nor his actions but don't underestimate Aro, I know you are older, but he is still wise" Carlisle stated knowing that the two of them would most likely laugh at this, but the two Romanians were desperate for revenge they were similar to Aro in that aspect they could be too quick to start a fight or look for a reason to fight similar to what Aro had done to them.
"I am wary of the Volturi, Stefan you don't have to worry, I know I do not belong amongst them and I will not go looking for friendship where there is none" Their advice was valuable to him though, he did not really consider the benefit to them that Bella's shield was to them and how much she could help, he would have to speak to her about that, their note about not turning their backs on the Volturi to this he nodded. With a much serious tone they talked about not letting the Volturi get the better of his family like they had with theirs and it was odd but Carlisle sense a small amount of sentimentally towards his coven from the two Romanian vampires, in their time with them fifty years ago his small family had obviously made some impression on these two and Carlisle was glad to see that. "I won't, I can guarantee you that"
"Can I in tern be assured that the two of you won't I think the term is gate crash, just to cause the Volturi trouble" He had a few worries on his mind and though he doubted the two of them would stoop to the level of gate crashing, Carlisle was sure the thought had probably crossed their mind at least once during the couple of months of hearing about this ball. It would put Carlisle's mind at ease knowing he would not have to try and stop total violence from erupting due to their uninvited presence in addition to this Carlisle himself had grown fond of Stefan and Vladimir after their time with them, he had been slightly put off by their unexpected arrival and their need to fight, but since then he had grown to understand the two vampires.
