KATE LUCIA DENALI
"Edward, you didn't tell me your wife was a shield." The sound of Eleazar's words alerted Kate and she turned, moving outside the house and to the porch. Edward looked down at Isabella now that he could see what was real and what was not real. Kate watched them for a moment, beside her Garrett as they had been talking. "What's a Shield?" Isabella asked her husband and Kate smiled slightly, watching from the porch to see what would happen. "The ones I've met are so different." Kate couldn't see a reaction from Isabella, but she moved at human pace towards them at first.
"It a defensive talent." The Amazon vampires looked at Isabella, listening to Eleazar's words carefully. "It's why I couldn't read your mind even before... It's why Aro couldn't." Kate smiled slightly, wanting to test this slightly as she moved closer. "You have a very powerful gift." Kate took her chance, grabbing the hand of Isabella and sending static shock through her hand, knowing herself that it was enough to put her on the ground.
"Oh yea, she a shield alright. That should of put her on her ass." Kate could hear and smell Carlisle to her right, as well as Tanya, her sister. A smile formed on her face as she looked at Isabella. "Or, your voltage has been exaggerated..." Kate turned to look at Garrett, he was a rather handsome man and she smiled slightly. "Maybe it only works on the weak." She said, extending her hand out, palm open, giving the man a challenge to see if he would touch her hand. He was taking the bait, he made a small face, she could see it coming and her eyes brighten, wanting to see what would happen.
Kate could feel the eyes of the others looking at her, see a part of a smile on those that she could see. He reached out towards her, one finger pointed at her palm. "Garrett, I wouldn't--." Carlisle voice said to his old friend, but he was still reaching towards her, accepting the challenge she had placed for him. He touched and I sent a jolt through his body... He grunted, falling to his knees. There were smiles on the faces of Tanya and Carmen, and Kate thought she saw one on Carlisle as well.
Garrett looked back up at her, a smile on his face. "You. Are an amazing woman." She smiled at him, knowing it had hurt but also know he didn't have to accept that challenge.
------ That was the first time her and Garrett really connect and she loved remembering it. She knew that those who could read her mind, like Edward, probably got tired of hearing it, but she couldn't help herself. Every now and then, Garrett would test his limits, see if he could with stand her touch... He was put to his knees each time, but sometimes he would be able to hold his own, depending on the power she would put into it. The following hours after that moment, they had all been sitting in the livingroom of the Cullen home... Kate smiled as she thought about it, moving among the forest not far from Denali. She was hunting, though she had only recently hunted yesterday, she decided to go out again, feeling a bit bored in her home and she could only sit around so much before things got boring.
She wasn't sure if anyone else was around. Sometimes the Cullens came up north on a hunting trip and they all knew Kate's favorite spot for hunting nearly every game because she would show them it all so that way they would know in case they needed to quench their thirst. Garrett knew too, so if he needed to find her, all he had to do was check a few locations. As her memory continued she remembered using Edward to test her theories, to make Isabella push her shield around him so she would be able to do it during the meeting with the Volturi.
------ "You need to visualize it." Her words went through the forest as they stood not far from the Cullen house. "See how it moves." To her right slightly was Isabella, listening intently to what she was saying. "What color it is." Edward was to her right, as well as Garrett and Emmett who were both wanting to watch. She had only heard recently that Isabella had beaten the man in a arm wrestling competition. It was very funny... Kate watched as Isabella thought hard, closing her eyes as she tried to force the shield from her body. Kate had a feeling it was going to take some convincing. "Now, picture it expanding." Kate could tell the girl was trying, but she needed to try harder. The Volturi would be near them in a few months and they needed to get this to work now. They didn't have time to play around, though the training would be... Interesting... "Will it to go beyond you." Kate could not help but glance up ever so slightly to the other vampire, one of Carlisle's other friends who didn't socialize much.
Kate swore she saw something forming around Isabella, blurring the air around her. It had to be the shield, but it wasn't expanding far enough. "I think she needs something to motivate her." She knew that Edward could hear her thoughts, knew what she was thinking. She looked at him, wanting him to volunteer before she made him do it without asking mentally. Isabella noticed the change, wondered what they were thinking, looked slightly confused. Edward moved forward slightly, right in front of Kate. "No..." Her voice was low and she took a step forward towards her husband. "It's alright, I can take it." Emmett was smiling. "He says that now." I glanced at Garrett, knowing that he had taken the challenge. She was going to be slightly fun. "Focus Bella. Or he's gonna be hurting." Emmett finally spoke, I could hear the amusement in his voice.
Isabella looked between the two of use, worry was on her face. "Edward, I'm not ready to do this yet." He was already on the ground before she could finish her words, grunting in pain as Kate sent volts through his body. Isabella stepped towards her husband, Kate barely moved to keep her hand on him for a moment. "I'm sorry. I said that I wasn't ready." Pain was written over the face of her cousin as he got up from the ground. "Dude, your not motivating her..." Emmett want a reaction and he got one.
"You wanna try?" His hands came up and he just gave a little grin. Kate smiled and looked at Edward... Round Two... Kate looked to Isabella, could tell she was trying to push her shield out and I could see it coming out, the air blurring. She got him again on the neck... Okay, maybe she was enjoying this a bit too much, but who wouldn't enjoy putting a cousin in a bit of pain. It was fun, right? Edward leaned towards Garrett and Emmett, trying to get away from a voltage that was even more powerful. "Kate!" Her voice was full of warning and she looked at her and gave a slight grin. "You seem to lack incentive. Shall I go and see if Renesmee's awake? Kate started to move towards the house. "Are you crazy?" She came at her as she spoke and Kate stopped. "Alright. This one's on full power." I looked at Edward, saw the plead in his eyes, hoping Isabella would get the shield around him...
Round three... Her hand touched him, but he didn't grunt... Didn't move, though I was giving full power and I could tell it was affecting him, if barely.
----- Kate smiled as she moved through the forest, remembering the time they finally had Isabella's shield going out and working. It had saved them, Kate was sure of it. It had protect them from Jane, the Volturi vermin that Kate absolutely hated. She was a brat little witch is what she was and she was Aro's little pet.

Learning how to work her ability as a shield was not as easy as she had hoped it would be. When Kate Denali had stepped out and used her power to shock the hell out of him, she was scared—worried even. She hadn’t known how best to take care of it—how to surround others the way they would need to when the Volturi would arrive. As a vampire she knew that Kate’s power was strong—and could really do some damage depending on how much strength the woman was using to shock someone. It had been quite a shock to learn that her talent was to shield herself—and anyone she wanted from harm. It had come in handy against the Volturi. Although it had taken it’s time to reveal itself to its full potential.
She recalled the conversation she had had with her husband—with Kate and the others in attendance. Of course she questioned herself, not knowing whether she had it in her to actually lower her guard enough to do what needed to be done. Edward had never been able to read her mind, nor had Aro, and she knew it was frustrating for them. Now that she knew that she was a shield, and that it was a defensive ability—now it made sense why Aro couldn’t read her, nor could Edward. Edward she wouldn’t have minded letting him in to read her mind—but Aro was another story entirely. When Kate had attempted to use her power on her, it held it’s potential—because if she hadn’t been a shield it would have instantly dropped her to the ground—and she had remained standing.
She recalled the scents of the vampires around them—each one different and unique in it’s own regard. It was more amusing to see Kate use the power on someone who didn’t have a shield at all, Carlisle’s old friend Garrett. He seemed more than willing to play the game—to become a guina pig for Kate’s experiment. She had watched as Kate’s power had sent Garrett on his knees—although Carlisle had tried to warn him not to do it. She had seen the spark between Garrett and Kate, and it was a good kind of a spark. It was the beginning of their connection as it were, and she was glad to see it. Kate deserved to be happy.
As the battle drew closer she was thankful for what Kate had been able to help her accomplish. The family had grown stronger, and she was willling to do whatever she had to—to help protect it. She could remember how Edward was foolish in allowing himself to be hit by Kate’s power hoping that she would be able to shield him from the attack. It took about three rounds for her to finally grasp how to do it, and it was only after Kate had threatened the life of her daughter that something had sparked in her. Something had come from deep within her and rose to the surface. She had been trying long before that—but nothing had really worked. Even with the motivations that Kate had tried—even with her husband being the target—it hadn’t been enough. She was starting to have it form just around her but it needed to expand, if she had hoped to protect their family—their allies from the Volturi. She had not wanted Edward to be a part of it. She didn’t want him harmed. She remembered she had protested Kate involving Edward but he had stepped up and wanted to do it. Why she didn't know.
The air around her began to blur and that meant she had it out—now she just had to focus on keeping it out and moving it past her to surround the others. Suddenly before she knew it she had concentrated enough to shield herself and Edward as well. Kate had attempted to use the shock treatment like before, it was round three and suddenly Kate’s power, even at full blast had barely done anything to him. It was barely affecting him, and she was thrilled about that.On top of that, though she had been able to assist both her family—and her extended family—the Denali’s in the battle, shielding them from the attacks that were coming straight toward them. Altlhough it hadn’t had the kind of cost that Alice had thought it would—there had been a cost, that of their cousin, Kate’s sister Irina. Irina was the one that had started this whole mess, but although she had made an error of judgement she and Edward—no one had wanted her dead because of it. But Aro wouldn’t allow Irina to live and she was the only casualty of the day....every now and then she thought of that and it was hard to think of. Because although Irina had made a mistake she didn’t believe the woman should have lost her life for it. To this day she did not like nor trust the Volturi but would have to respect them should the time come for another meeting with them. Until then, she was going to keep her distance from them—it was safer that way. Although it had been over fifty years she wondered how things would have ended if she hadn’t had her shield or Alice had that vision.
That particular day in question—she had left Forks, Washington....it had been a while since she had left the area and with Charlie’s death sometimes she needed to escape. She had decided to get out and do something. Each of her family members had something else to do that particular day. Edward, Jasper and Emmett had gone out hunting. Carlisle was at the hospital; Esme, Alice and Rosalie were out shopping for the day. Nessie had finally gotten some time to spend with Jake so she was in La Push where she was safe and sound. So it left her with very little to do. She figured she’d go say hello to the Denali’s since she hadn’t paid them a visit in quite some time. She had gotten in her car and was going to take a drive. It would give her some time to think, and to reflect on all that had happened. She had driven rather fast, surprised she hadn’t been caught speeding—as if the humans could detect her at all, but they hadn't.
Approaching the area where the Denali’s had made their home, she couldn’t help but smile. The truth was, she hadn’t been here in a while...and it appeared as though not much had changed. She pulled into the area, and parked near the house, though out of the way in case the Denali’s needed to leave. Smirking, she didn’t smell the family in question which meant they were probably out in the woods near their home, hunting. With a run—she took off, until she caught the scent of one of the Denali’s one she had recognized as that belonging to Kate Denali. She knew Kate would certainly ask questions but she was going to try and answer. Why she was there, was just because she wanted to see Kate and her family and well because she had nothing else to do that particular day which was why she was there to begin with. She walked up to where Kate was and found herself moving so that Kate could see her. “Hello, Kate.” She greeted her cousin, although not biologically related, her coven and that of the Denali’s had always considered themselves to be extended family, and it wasn’t like she was trespassing. Since Kate had even attended hers and Edward’s wedding.

KATE LUCIA DENALI
The forest of Alaska were always so beautiful and she had found a place to relax, not having to go anywhere far, just right within’ ear shot of the home if anyone needed her, though they could call her cell phone, which was in her back pocket on vibrate. It was nice having a way to contact the Cullens fast, though they could run just as fast and get there in a couple of hours. She smiled at the memory of the training, when Kate had used her ability on Edward Cullen. She knew it had hurt, but what family didn’t have cousin’s picking on them and making their own lives a bit of an adventure. Those moments had been tense, though they were able to relax some since they knew the Volturi were not coming until the snow was sticking to the ground, but it was a long and tense wait. And, with so many vampires in one area, it didn’t help the local pack at the time.
It had been a great victory to give Isabella her full power, to help her make it and once they had… It was wonderful. Kate had heard about the vision that Alice had seen through the others and the fact that it didn’t happened was wonderful. If they had also lost Carlisle and Irina, Kate was sure that it would have been worse on them to endure the pain. And then… Seth and Leah… She had found out the names over the wolves from Isabella, those who had died in the vision. It had hurt the frozen heart to know that two siblings had passed away and that their mother was still alive and had also lost her husband. Kate never said anything to the wolves of course, she had only really met Jacob and then at the meadow, they had all stayed in Wolf form, mostly to hide their own identities.
She smiled at the memory of Garrett, in fact, she chuckled outwardly at the remembrance. How he had been there for her, especially during her time of need at the meadow. Irina had been killed, because of a mistake but the Volturi never gave second chances… Why couldn’t she of found another way to tell the Volturi? Why didn’t she come to them and let them all handle it without the Volturi getting involved? Kate found herself looking down at the ground and wondering if things would have been different if she had not gone to the Volturi… She would have never met Garrett, so at least one good thing came out of it for her other than saving her family and meeting many new vampires.
… That scent… Kate head snapped around quickly, looking south as she took it in and smiled. She knew that scent better than anyone else, other than Garrett’s of course, and her sister. Isabella was near, but she was driving, he could hear the car moving up the drive way and into their parking area. Why hadn’t she just run and save the gas, though she knew that money wasn’t an issue and to be honest, they could get gas pretty easily if they really wanted to. Again, that was another thing completely. The sound of the door shutting on the car made Kate turn her body just as she heard the sound of someone running. ”Hello, Kate.” Katrina smiled at her cousin as she walked over towards her cousin. "Bella."
Her words left a smile on her lips as she walked towards her. "What are you doing here? You didn't tell us you were coming." She said to the vampire. Compared to Kate, Isabella was far younger than the 1000+ aged vampire. Alaska always was known for it’s brilliance in scenery. She had loved it, and it had been a great place to visit, especially when she had come to visit her cousins. Her cell phone was in her pocket, same number that she had had, when she still lived with Charlie. She had kept the same number even after Charlie had died.
Of course aside from her family—no one else had that number that was still among the living. It was nice to have a way to contact her family—not just the others within her coven but that of the Denali’s as well. Although today she had driven her car, she could have easily gotten there on foot though it would have taken longer than it had to drive. Besides she wanted to just take a drive. Each member within the two covens were important, whether they held a gift or not.
When Kate had picked on Edward by using her gift on him, it had been difficult—to witness. Though when they weren’t using their gifts on eachother—the moments had been relaxing almost, as they knew that the Volturi weren’t coming as long as the weather held out. Once the snow started to come—the long anticipated moment was finally upon them. She knew that it hadn’t helped that with their numbers—of all the vampires that had come to their aid—that the shifters—Jacob’s Pack and Sam’s both had been fairly busy.
It was quite interesting to see how her gift was brought to life—so to speak. With it being at full power—thanks to Kate’s help, they were able to survive. But she recalled the vision that Alice had had, and how many lives would have been lost. Had Carlisle, Seth and Leah died, the way that Irina did, she couldn’t even put into words the feeling that would leave on her frozen heart. Especially because Seth and Leah’s mom had already lost her husband, and to lose a child—she couldn’t even imagine the loss that she would have felt. Jacoob had been helpful—and had been the only one who had revealed his true form, as the others stayed in their wolf form, though she figured that was for two reasons, either they felt safer in that form, or they wanted to keep their identities a secret. Either way it had all worked out the way it was supposed to.
Although she hadn’t known Irina very well, she had thought it was a shame that the woman had to die—all for making a mistake. People make mistakes but the Volturi weren’t one to give second chances, as she very well understood. It was still hard to handle, after Irina was family. She had no idea that Irina had gone to the Volturi over Renessme, but if she had known before hand she would have done everything she could to prevent it. She did not blame Irina for the Volturi coming, as they would have found a reason to come sooner or later. Although she knew that everything happened the way it was meant to—even with all the losses. Their lives would be so much different had the events that happened on that tragic day. She only wished she was able to save Irina too. But she was happy that Kate had Garrett now, because she knew that after Kate had lost her mother and sister, she deserved more than anything else to be happy—they all did.
Of course she could have run—but that wasn’t the point. She had wanted to drive—to give her time to think. Although she could have run which would have saved on gas, though money wasn’t a problem to be honest. If necessary they could get gas fairly quickly and easily but that wasn’t really the point. She smiled as Kate approached her. “Kate.” She grinned. “Well, I just got in the car and started driving. I know I should’ve told you guys I was coming—but I figured it’d be more fun to surprise you. Besides I haven’t seen you guys in a while. So I figured I would come visit, if that’s okay. I know I probably should have called....as I’m sure you’re busy. Where is everyone? It’s very quiet.” She said honestly. It was nice to see Kate in person, instead of talking to her on the phone.
