Emmett sat on the bed of the hotel room. This was the last place he wanted to be.. well, actually being at the Ball was the last place he wanted to be. This place was a close second. He never really liked hotels for multiple reasons. First, too many people. It wasn't so much a thirst control issue, but a different type of control. He and Rosalie couldn't go around smashing walls and furniture. Basically, being in a hotel meant no fun. With the ball, he knew they had to be extra careful. He sighed, looking around, waiting for Rosalie. She was probably getting his clothes ready. He didn't even bother to ask her what he was wearing. There was no point. She would hand him what he had to put on.
He just wanted this to be over with. He wanted his family heading home... everyone of them. While they Volturi might think their motives were hidden, everyone knew they were just looking for new members. Emmett would be sure to keep a close eye on everyone; especially Alice. Still, he had to be careful. Just about everyone had run through a list of don'ts with him... Don't break anything. Don't curse. Don't make jokes about them. Don't talk too loud. Don't get angry. He wanted to be annoyed, but he couldn't argue with them. The Volturi pissed him off and one day he'd really let them know how he felt.
He was sure Rosalie would come in almost shooting out that list. She was probably nervous. Not so much about losing any of our family.. not that she would want that. She felt that if we could be nice and courteous, they'd be nicer to us. It made sense, but nothing the Volturi does ever made sense. He couldn't blame Rosalie for liking them. Or, if anything, liking their lifestyle. He would want nothing more than to give Rosalie a similar life, but not with the Volturi. She wasn't blind to their evil, but it was true; they lived a good life.
Finally Emmett stood up, pacing the room, trying to relieve his boredom. Maybe he could get Rosalie to change her mind; they could go home. The Volturi wouldn't miss them. He knew he couldn't; he couldn't sit and wait to see who returned. Maybe he could convince Rosalie to stay in the hotel with him. They wouldn't be able to break anything, but they could still do something. He thought back to all of those don'ts. He wasn't sure he could follow those rules. He'd simply explain that to Rosalie and she would understand. They'd have more fun in the hotel than they would at the ball anyway.

Rosalie came out of the bathroom in her robe. Her hair was knotted in a fancy up-do and decorated with shimmering pearls. Her makeup was flawless and a pair of diamond earrings dangled delicately from her ears.
"Now, remember, don't be too loud and don't curse, and please don't break anything," she said, getting two garment bags out of the closet and bringing one over to Emmett. "And before you say anything - yes, you have to wear all of it."
She unzipped her own bag to reveal a slinky red dress that had just enough class so that you couldn't deem it slutty, but only just slightly. She smiled as she ran her hand over the satin fabric. It had taken her weeks to pick out the dress and she had been excited to wear it ever since. She hoped that the Volturi would like it, that it would make such an impression on them that they wouldn't be able to take their eyes off of her. She didn't let herself admit it, but she longed for them to want to acquire her as much as they wanted to acquire Alice.
It seemed to her that she was the only one in her coven that was excited about the ball, but that didn't bother her. She enjoyed dressing up and dancing and the whole concept of a high society party. It reminded her of her time as a human, when she would attend debutante balls and charity engagements with her parents. One glance at Emmett told her that he was going to start protesting again, but she hoped that putting on the dress would distract him enough so that he wouldn't put up too much of a fight. They were going. And that was final.

Emmett stopped when he heard Rosalie coming out of the bathroom. He turned to look at her, grinning as she spewed her list. "I know, I know. I'll try." He stopped grinning when he looked at the garment bag she was handing him. "But... He cut himself off; he knew he couldn't argue. Maybe during another occasion, but not for this. Beside, arguing might make it harder to get her to stay. He took the bag and unzipped it, sighing at the clothes inside. He probably should have guessed she'd have him go all out.
Trying to ease the situation he looked back at her and smiled "You look beautiful." he laid his bag over the back of a chair and started walking towards her. He paused to look at the dress in her hands. Just picturing her in that dress was enough to drive him mad. He wanted to wait for her to put it on so he could rip it off... but he wasn't even sure he could last. He pulled his shirt off and continued walking towards her, reaching out to place his hands on her arms. "You're fucking hot. You don't even need to put the dress on for me to see that."
He gently pulled her towards him and kissed her, trying to pull her closer. This had to work. Everything about this was perfect. Nobody to bother them, more than enough time... he wasn't about to pass up this opportunity. He couldn't help but keep going. Running his hands down her back he tried to deepen the kiss. "Let's just stay here... we'd have all night."

Rosalie sighed. So this was going to be his tactic. She had pondered what his approach would be while she was taking a shower. She knew she'd have to contend with some sort of attempt at getting her to skip the ball, but it wasn't going to work. He was so cute, though, it was hard to shut him down completely.
She smiled as he came closer and gave him a quick kiss while running her hands down his arm. He knew all the compliments would make her melt and normally that would be the case, but she had her mind made up and was too stubborn to let him change it.
"And you're handsome. I bet you'd look even better in that suit. The bowtie makes it super classic, too," she said.
He pressed on, asking her to stay in the hotel all night. Again, it was tempting. Their sex was always amazing, but there was something about fancy hotels and having to remain quiet that made it seem like a delicious forbidden fruit sort of thing. She took in a deep breath, kissing him again before she pulled back.
"We have eternity. This ball will take a day or two at the most. Deal with it," she said, leaving no tone in her voice that said it was up for discussion. "And put your tux on."
She smiled at him, knowing he would comply sooner or later.

He couldn't believe this wasn't working. She must have thought he'd try this. He kissed her again, then again.. just to make sure. "I wont tell.. nobody will come looking for us." He was getting desperate, but even he knew this wouldn't work. Defeated, he let her go. "At least I get to see you in that hot dress." He went back and looks at the suit. "A bow tie?
He stripped his pants off and laid the suit on the bed. Quickly he dressed, everything a little skewed and messy. He tried to smooth it out, but almost made it worse. Eventually he gave up and put the bow tie around his neck. He didn't even attempt to tie it. It wasn't that he didn't know how, he thought he was pretty good at it. He just knew Rosalie would fix it no matter what, so he might as well let her do it first. He glanced at himself in the mirror trying to smooth his shirt out again. "What are we even going to do at the ball.. besides dance, I mean?" He didn't really care for an answer, no matter what she'd say, it would translate to boring.
He'd love to tell the Volturi to back off. Get in Aro's face.. maybe punch him. It was thoughts like these that reminded him not to blame everyone for reminding him to calm down and be nice. That didn't change the fact that it was true.. Aro needed to learn a lesson. He needed to learn that he couldn't hurt any of the Cullens; not while Emmett was around. He didn't realize he had started growling. It was a low growl, but loud enough for Rosalie to hear. He quickly cut himself off and glanced at her.

Rosalie rolled her eyes, but smiled slightly when he growled. It was best he get it out now before they were in a room full of people would could take them both down in the blink of an eye. Emmett failed to grasp that reality, though. She knew he thought he could fight them one hundred to one and still come out on top. She walked over to him and pulled him adjacent to her.
"You know, you could try being nice. You always get yourself worked up like this, and they haven't even done anything to you yet," she began, working on tying his bow tie. "Give them a chance. Maybe they'll be really nice and let you leave early." It was the only reward she could think of that might actually make him pay attention to her.
She worked on smoothing out his clothes and literally had to tuck his shirt into his pants for him. She grabbed the belt he'd left behind and put it on him. He looked hot, classy, and oh so --- She found herself growling a little bit now.

Emmett glanced at her when she walked over. He knew she noticed him growl, but she obviously didn't care. "You know, you could try being nice. You always get yourself worked up like this, and they haven't even done anything to you yet. Give them a chance. Maybe they'll be really nice and let you leave early." He shook his head. "They've done more than enough to us. I'm tired of dealing with their shit." He started growling again. "If they start anything tonight I'm going to--" He cut himself off. Rosalie wanted to go to this ball. He started feeling bad about making a big deal of this. Even the Volturi weren't dumb enough to try something with so many witnesses.
He smiled slightly, trying to calm down. "Maybe we'll get to leave early." He repeated her, including her this time. He wasn't going to leave early without her; she had to know that. He looked at her as she stared at him. His smile grew when she started to growl. Maybe he still had a chance. He reached forward and grabbed her by the waste. He continued to pull her closer as he kissed her. "We can be a little late." With a low growl, he started pulling at her dress. Maybe if he got it off of her, she wouldn't want to go...but he had to figure out how to do it without ripping the dress. If he ripped it, he'd get nothing for the next millennium.

"Maybe we'll get to leave early," he said, and the plurality of it was not lost on her. She knew he wouldn't leave her there by herself, which meant she controlled when they left. She liked that idea because she wasn't planning on leaving until the party was over. They didn't get to do things like this very often and she was going to milk it for all it was worth. It might be ages before they got to do anything else besides go to high school for the millionth time and hunt in the never-ending rain.
"Stop," Rosalie said, jumping back the second he touched her dress. It was delicate and she knew if he was thinking about sex it would be ripped off before she knew it, regardless of if he meant to or not.
She stopped growling and pulled the strap back on her shoulder. Glancing in the mirror, she adjusted everything back into place and smoothed down a stray hair. She looked amazing and she knew it. She was twice as beautiful as that Heidi girl and ten times more gorgeous than the rest of the Volturi. She'd be the hottest one there, so she couldn't understand why Emmett wouldn't see that and want to go show her off. That's what her father used to like to do. And Royce.
She held up a necklace with a rose made out of diamonds that Emmett had given her for Christmas. "Come help me put this on, and don't touch my dress. I'm on to you, Emmett Dale. You're not going to ruin this night for me."

She pulled back faster than he thought she would. She seemed very concerned about her dress... concerned about tonight. "Sorry" was all he could say as he pulled back. He looked at her reflection in the mirror and smiled. "At least I'll be at the ball with the hottest vampire." He ran a hand down her back and kissed her cheek. She was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. He couldn't wait to see the look on everyone's faces when he walked in with her. They all knew her, but she was sure to turn heads anyway. As long as nobody tried to do anything.
He was getting himself upset again so he tried to calm down. Rosalie would be pissed if he showed her he couldn't hold himself together. He wanted out of this, but he wasn't going to do it at the risk of Rosalie being pissed. Anyway, she'd probably make him stay behind while she went and then he'd really worry about some of those assholes trying to go after her. He quickly looked at her when she spoke. "Sorry, I know. I wont. You don't get to do this a lot, so let's go. We'll have a good time." He smiled, trying to make it look as genuine as possible.

She smiled widely when he complimented her. Adjusting the necklace to its proper place, she looked at herself in the mirror again. This was definitely one of the best dresses she had ever picked out, and that's saying something. The way it hugged her curves just right, showed just the right amount of cleavage, and had a slit just high enough to tease everyone without giving too much away...if she weren't herself, she would have been infatuated. Instead, she turned to Emmett when he spoke. He looked amazing himself, so there was no way they were going to be overlooked at this event. It among the most beautiful creatures in the world, they were still both ridiculously good looking.
"Sorry, I know. I wont. You don't get to do this a lot, so let's go. We'll have a good time," he said with a smile. She knew it wasn't genuine, but she didn't really care at this point. As long as he wasn't arguing anymore, she was happy. He could surely suffer through one night of this...or however long it lasted...if she could sit through those never-ending football games.
"That's the spirit," she said, returning the smile, pretending not to notice that he was faking his. "We'd better get going. I don't want to be late. They don't seem to like that."
She wondered what the decor would be like, and what the Volturi would be wearing. They usually wore those cloaks that made them look like wizards, but surely they would resort to formal attire for the evening. As she grabbed her purse from the dresser, she tried to decide who she would target this time. Aro and the other elders were usually so well guarded that every time she tried to go near them she found herself walking in another direction without realizing it. The lowly guards wouldn't do her much good, and the women all hated her, she was sure. That left the kid and the red-haired guy and a few others that she couldn't remember. Demetri - that was the one she'd talk to. He seemed interested in her last time they met. She'd have to figure out a way for Emmett to not kill him, though, if he asked for a dance.
"Come on, babe. Let's go," she said, taking his hand and heading for the door.

His smile became more genuine when she smiled. Either she didn't realize or she was willing to look past his fake smile. It didn't matter to him; her smile was real and that's what he cared about. Even if it meant going to this dumb ball. He didn't understand how she could love these boring events, but hate watching sports with him. They're exciting; these things aren't.
She urged him to go; she didn't want them to be late. He'd be fine with being late. They could quietly enter after everything started and quietly (and quickly) leave before it finished. Maybe everyone would ignore them; they could dance together, make out a little, and be gone. Rosalie wouldn't have it, though. Making out would probably look bad. She wanted to impress them. He took her hand when she offered and started walking with her.
Thinking about it, he realized that she would want to talk to them; to spend time with the members of the Volturi. The last thing he wanted to do was talk to them, but he wouldn't leave her. He'd endure it. The last thing he needed was a Volturi member doing something to her... or worse, thinking they could have her. She was beautiful; they would see it.. many would fall for her. He couldn't stop them, but he would stop them from trying anything. He unconsciously pulled her closer.

Rosalie smiled and rubbed his arm when he pulled her closer. He was protective of her and she loved that, but sometimes it could get a little extreme. She knew Emmett would take any opportunity to fight when it came to her, making something out of nothing. She couldn't count the times the boys at the high school had gone to the nurse with unexplainable shattered bones if they'd tried to strike up a conversation with her. None of them had ever told on Emmett, though, probably out of fear he would come back to finish the job. This ball, however, was not the place for behavior like that. If he made a move on one of the Volturi, he'd be dead before she could try to stop him.
Pulling slightly away from him, she said, "Now, remember what I said about no hitting. Or yelling. Or anything like that. This isn't going to turn into a war with the Volturi, no matter what, okay?"
The thought of it worried her. She knew Emmett's words on something like this had very little meaning, and she was sure he'd stopped listening to her warnings hours ago. He was an emotional creature, instinctive. Her steps faltered a moment as they walked out of the hotel, passing the doorman with the bandaged up arm. She could smell the dried blood underneath and shook her head. Glancing up at Emmett, she checked his eyes. It was that instinctual part of him that worried her yet again. There would be blood at this ball, lots of it. And not contained within humans, but flowing freely out of them, goblets full of it, passed around as if it were nothing more than water.
"You hunted before we left, right?" she couldn't help but ask. She turned a corner and paused, looking across the square at Volturi castle.

These drugs are often prescribed for acute pain that stems from traumatic injury, such as surgery or a broken bone. Opioids currently cause the most prescription drug-related overdose deaths in the United States — and that rate is still rising. Because the risks are so great, opioids are used at the lowest dose possible, usually for just a few days. Brand names. Hydrocodone (Hysingla ER, Zohydro ER); hydrocodone-acetaminophen (Norco, Zyfrel, others); fentanyl (Actiq, Duragesic, Fentora), oxycodone (OxyContin, Roxicodone, others); oxycodone-acetaminophen (Percocet, Roxicet, others); others How they work. Opioids, just like real opium, mimic the natural pain-relieving chemicals — called endorphins — produced by your brain. These drugs "turn down the volume" on the pain signals your nervous system sends through your body. They also muffle other nerve cell functions, such as your breathing, heart rate and level of alertness. Bottom line. Opioids are a last resort for chronic pain management. They may be the right choice for long-term pain related to cancer and its treatments or, in rare cases, noncancer pain that hasn't responded to any other medications. Because the risks are so serious, you'll need careful and frequent follow-ups with your doctor if you use opioids long term. While there isn't a cure for chronic pain, many effective pain medications are available to help you function effectively and enjoy your days. As you try different drugs, alone or in combination, work with your doctor to target the simplest long-term solution possible. Keep your medication risks to a minimum to improve your odds of many good days, for many years to come.
