seth's stuck in those awkward transition years for the rest of his life. but, lucky for himself (and those arround him) he's plenty optomistic with just about everything. he's playful and friendly, almost to the point of being annoying. one would think that over the last fifty years he'd have calmed down some, but he's still just as childish as ever. he's the jokester type, always trying to lighten the situation with a crack of some sort.[/size]
but beneath his playful and pranking exterior, seth's nothing more than a pup. he's scared of losing more people he cares about, especially his sister, leah. and he's scared of never finding the most important person to lose. he's seen plenty of imprints to know that they can happen, will happen. but in his sixty-five years, seth's never found his. all he truly wants is to be accepted and loved.

leah sat next to him while his mother stood in front of them both, her face splotched with tears. the forks police chief stood at her side, a gentle hand on her shoulder. seth turned to leah, then to his mom. 'what's wrong? what's happening? why's charlie here?' had the hunt found something? he'd known his father and the other men were going out to search for the bears or whatever was in the forest. but...no. charlie'd gone with them, led the hunt. so why was he here now, and his mother crying...?
'i got some bad news to tell you kids, but you've both got to be strong and help your mother, alright?' the police chief's voice was soft, comforting, but somehow stern. the blood in seth's veins ran cold, suddenly fearing the worse. beside him, he felt leah tense up, and he reached to take her hand. 'seth, leah, harry --your dad... he, well, he had a heart attack while we were out. he's gone, kids. i'm sorry.'
it was leah who squeezed their joined hands, a grip tight enough to make his bones ache. together as one the siblings gasped, brown eyes wide and hurt. their father...dead. sure, seth had thought his dad to be old, and in truth, he wasn't actually young... but...
there were no words, only silent shock. leah's grip grew tighter still before she let go completely and ran from the house, tears already spilling over.
'i'm really sorry, son,' charlie repeated, patting sue's shoulder before dropping his hand to his side. 'i wish there were something i could do...' he shook his head, seth following the action.
'there's nothing, mr. swan. th --' he couldn't thank him, not for telling him that his dad was dead. it didn't seem right. the ache in his chest was growing, burning. he'd soon be crying like his mom and his sister. seth rose to his feet, wrapped his mother into a tight hug, then retreated to his room. no one needed to see him cry; he could morn all on his own.* * *
something was wrong. something, but whatever that something was, seth couldn't name it. he felt hot, stretched out, heavy. his stomach hurt, but at the same time it didn't. he just felt sick. and he'd felt sick for days. leah'd gotten over the same thing months ago. mono, she'd said.
so somehow, she'd given it to seth and now he was just as sick as she was. such a great sister he had. whatever this was, mono or something else, it sucked. he didn't feel like he could move, felt paralyzed on his back. but he could move. something in him wanted to move, needed to move. something in him made him move.
he was off the bed in a second, out of the house in the next. and then the voices. all of them, in his head, speaking to each other rather than him. weren't the voices supposed to talk to you when you went crazy? seth shook his head, which was no feeling heavier, larger, trying to clear the sensation.
'the hell is going on?' he heard his thought somehow, as if he'd spoken it out loud. the other voices jumped at his voice, firing off at him.
'seth?'
'seth, you shifted?'
'you did it!'
'seth!'
'seth!'
'dammit, seth! why'd you have to change too?'
that last one. he knew it. his sister's voice, leah's. what was her voice doing in his head? and...'change? what change? what's going on?'
the voices came again, all at once. he struggled to separate them into actual words instead of just noise.
'way to go, seth!'
'you're a wolf now, man!'
'dammit, seth. really.'
'hold on, son. i'll be there soon enough.' he knew that one too, but couldn't put a face to the voice. be there soon? how did they know where he was? and... a wolf? a wolf now? no, he was seth. a boy. a human boy.
seth looked down at his hand. they weren't there. he no longer had hands. he had... had paws. and fur. and --he swung his head around, the heavy feeling still there-- and a tail. he was a...well, a wolf apparently, but he couldn't be sure, couldn't see himself.
'seth.' he looked up, another wolf only feet away. black, huge, scary. 'seth, don't be scared. it's sam. it's alright.'
sam? leah's ex? leah's ex was a wolf. what. the. hell.
'seth, you remember the legends of our tribe, don't you? we are descended from wolves. we are wolves.' the boy felt his eyes grow wide, heard a sort of whine come from him.
he tried to speak, tried to ask how it could happen, how any of this could happen. but all that came out were growls and barks. he tried thinking it then, like the others were. 'how?'
the black sam-wolf smiled, his jaw dropping slightly and lips stretching to show sharp teeth. 'come with me, i'll explain it all to you.'* * *
how had this one got away from the others? how'd it find them? sickly sweet scent, blood red eyes; it was one of them for sure. and it wasn't alone. a second scent, sweeter than the first. two vampires. two had found them.
unsure of what to do, wolf-seth looked to edward. 'get out of here, seth.' his golden eyes were trained on the other, the one seth couldn't see.
he wanted to follow orders, but... edward couldn't take them both, could he? seth whined low, 'i can help, edward, i can. i can take him, and you can have the other one.'
edward only shook his head the smallest amount. no. no, he couldn't help. why did everyone think he couldn't help because he was so young? fifteen wasn't that young! he could still fight!
but edward had said no. seth started to slink away, sandy tail tucked between his hind legs, still whining. the first vampire lunged at edward, then the second snarled, lunging as well. he did need his help, edward couldn't take them both and protect bella. seth spun around, leaping at the male. he'd help. he'd show them he could.* * *
'mom...?' his voice called to the elderly woman softly, not wanting to wake her if she was asleep. with no response, seth assumed she was and walked as quietly as he could into her bedroom. sue clearwater had been ill for a few months, one disease after the next. she'd fight one off only to have another come take it's place.
the boy took his mother's hand. it was cold, but to him, all humans felt cold. he sqeezed the cold hand gently, stroking it's smooth back with his thumb. 'mom, you get better, alright?' he only whispered, the ache in his chest stealing his voice. she had to get better. if she was gone, all he'd have left was leah.
something felt wrong though. human hands weren't this cold... and they had a slight throb to them, a pulse. this hand, sue's hand... it didn't. seth flipped her hand over, pressed to fingers to her wrist. no pulse. dead.
numbly, he dropped his mother's arm, felt himself fall to his knees. the tears came faster this time than they had with his father. after his father, he'd still had his mother. after his mother he had... no one. no parents. a sister, but no one else.* * *
sam's pack, jacob's pack. who cared. they were both the same, mosty. except jacob's pack liked the cullens. mostly. so he was in jacob's pack. had been for... well, since sam'd tried to kill bella and nessie. he'd been the first member of the pack, but of course, since he was so young, he hadn't been made the beta. leah was now, or, at least seth thought she was. it was confusing, the pack rankings. honestly, all he understood was that jake was alpha.
the cullens had left a few decades back, but with the others, seth kept the wolf inside of him, stayed immortal. just recently, they'd returned, all looking just the same, except nessie, who'd grown some since then. they weren't here to stay, seth knew that much. but they were here now, and that was all that he cared about.

the wolf in him was his closest friend. sure, the wolf in him was him, but that was a fact seth liked to overlook. there were others, jacob, leah, quil and embry, edward and nessie and the rest of the cullens. they were his friends too. but they were all older (in many more ways than one), and all wanted to do the sorts of things older people did. the couples wanted to be with their mate, and, honestly, with jacob and quil having imprinted, that left embry and...leah.
after being with her, reading her thoughts, for the last fifty years, seth had every right to want to be away from his sister. and every right to love her as much as he did. she'd been through so much, but, really, did that mean she could be as bitter as she was? seth'd gone through almost as much, just not the sam and emily business, and turned out just fine, if he'd say so himself. but being with leah... he couldn't say there were many good times between them lately.
shifting to his wolf form, seth grew more at ease. the wolf and him were one now, their wants the same. he let out a howl, his head tilted up at the black sky above. such a cliche thing, howling at the moon, but it felt so...right. he smiled to himself, the wolf's lips stretching into a goofy (and scary, he'd learned to realize) grin. instinct was his master now, and instinct rarely made bad choices.
now, his instinct was telling him to run, to test his legs and speed. and so, the sandy wolf ran, his four legs pushing as hard as the could. he wasn't as fast as the others, something seth was sure was because of his smaller size, but he made up for it with his strength. he was strong, could push himself in a single bound what took others one and a half. and, though the distance sounded small, it made up for a lot.
he ran, through the forest, the night, to the cliff's edge. there he sat, staring at the moon. he wanted to howl again, but he couldn't wake the humans. that was the rule. don't let them find out about you, don't draw attention to yourself as a wolf. seth had to be content with just watching.
