to many of those who meet him, it's not hard to see the darkness looming in rafael's eyes. it's present in the way he speaks, in the way he looks, and even in the way he moves, as if, by walking, he is carrying that dark shadow with him, one that be either comforting, like a shroud, or frightening. although not an overly talkative man, he will respond when addressed in low, calm tones, ones that never seem to change from their practiced state unless his temper is roused, which, while hard to do, is always a terrifying thing to behold. and yet, even with all the secrecy that surrounds him like a tangible cloud, many mistake him as a man who would not put up with secrecy or deception, especially with his brilliantly golden irises.
but, alas, this is untrue. for just as he carries the darkness around him like a cloak, rafael is also manipulative, the skills to deceive but second nature to him. with a well-placed word he will not hesitate to turn brother against brother, or mother against son, whispering his own desires into their ear until they believe them to be their own. he will not hesitate to encourage immoral acts in others, though he rarely muddies his hands in a physical sense, instead watching with a fond smile as his suggestions carry themselves out. he is inexplicably drawn to the darkness in others, like it is a magnetic force pulling him forward, and, instead of being repulsed by it, often finds himself enamoured, and yet he also despises it when it is embodied in certain ways. it's an eternal paradox with him, this shadow man who tries constantly to claw himself towards the light, but often it is said that he corrupts whomever he touches, finding the lights and snuffing them out completely.
yet there is some light in him, no matter how small, that makes him need the light of others, as well. it is this like that makes him love, that makes him protect and maim and kill anyone who would dare to bring harm to those he holds dear to him. perhaps then, many would say, rafael's greatest flaw is his large capacity to love, and to love dangerously and with his entire being. it is always that love that drives him to exploit the darkness in others, that love that drives him to shroud himself in shadows in order to protect the light of those he loves. yes, rafael's capacity for love is large, but at the same time he cannot love multiple people. instead, he often focuses his love and devotion on a small group, or even a singular person, and they will keep his protection with them until he dies, or until they betray him.
to those around him, especially strangers, rafael takes on the persona of a more polite individual.

History ::[/i]
from the exact moment of his birth, rafael's life was a battle for recognition and status. the bastard child of luis phillip de luján, a high-ranking courier in holy roman emperor maximilian I's court, and a lowly ward in his father's household, catalina maría de herrera, there was no denying from the time of his birth his resemblance to his father, whose strong, dark features had been the envy of many others at the spanish court. from his birth in 1503, he was already in possession of an elder brother, luis hernán, his father's heir presumptive, and only child, though the young luis hernán was sickly, a result of an infant illness, and many worried he would die. it was for that reason that luis phillip decided to elevate his bastard, declaring that he could father many healthy sons, an important thing to boost his fertility after the death of his first wife, also named catalina, when the sweating sickness swept across europe. he was quick to remarry, this time the daughter of a more affluent noble, whose name, isabel de torres, was already well known.
rafael, then christened mauricio jaime de luján, spent his early years in the nursery with his half-brother luis, and they were soon joined by half-brother gabriel sebastian. luis phillip's young new wife would eventually give birth to a daughter, catalina isabel, but she would miscarry twice more before the young girl was delivered safely, after which they would have no children.
though rafael spent much of his time in the nursery with his half-brothers, the social gap between them soon became very evident. luis hernan, though weak as a child and sickly even as he continued to grow older, grew more and more arrogant with each passing year; more and more assured of his place as his gushing governesses continued to fill his head with how important he would be one day. the gap grew even bigger after, even presenting his children to visitors to the family estate, rafael was kept away, hidden in the nursery like a secret, as the rest were formerly introduced. the few times he was brought down, he was kept to the side, his hand held firmly in that of their governess as she held the young boy back from his brothers. when he had asked her why, turning large, moist, dark eyes on her, she had merely sniffed and said that his status wasn't as important as theirs.
"after all, one can't expect a bastard child to be presented the same way as a legitimate one," she had said dismissively, and when one of the servant girls had found him later, curled up in the laundry, she had held him and wiped his tears and explained to him, as no one else would, the difference in his status from his brothers, and even his sister.
after that, everything was different. gradually, all his siblings were presented to the court, blossoming into their youth while rafael, then mauricio, was left behind, his bitterness growing like a dark cloud instead his chest. he would attend the grad events, see the nobles with their glittering dresses and jewels shining as they danced by, but he would be like a shadow, clinging to the edges, watching everything with resentful eyes. sometimes he drew positive attention--whispers behind the fans of women who would avert their eyes and laugh softly when they thought he was paying attention, praising his dark features and posture, "so much like his father, oh my yes..."--but far more often it pity or sympathy for his diminished status.
so he threw himself into that status. from the shadows, he did everything he could to raise himself up, as much as a now-unwanted bastard child possibly could be. when negotiations between Spain and England opened up, rafael listened; he placed his words in the right ears. when war blossomed between spain and france, he was also there, murmuring his shadowed commentary and watching as it spread through the court like poison. and as he his twenty-sixth year, his was a name the court knew well; his was a name that was spoken with a mixture of awe and something unspoken.
but he tired of it. he longed to leave the shadows of the court and step into the dazzling light, where secrets ran free and dangerous, but he could not. he watched as his brothers fathered children, married women and slept with other women on the side, and he watched as his sister was married to someone whose company she genuinely enjoyed. he felt a perverse longing for that sort of light, but he knew that it was unobtainable to him.
it was then he came across felicity. she lived under another name then, but she was an unmistakable figure in the court; a beautiful blonde woman, unmarried, with a fortune to her name. she was, they said, easily the most beautiful woman at court, and it was rumoured the new king would take her as his paramour, at one point. but it never happened, and so rafael, like the rest of the court, merely watched her, until one day he ran into her on the spanish streets, and she approached him, offering him all that he wished. he accepted her offer without hesitation, endured the burning agony that slowly killed him and brought him back again, opening his eyes in his new life to behold her face, more beautiful than it had been even in his human life. he became drawn to the mixture of light and darkness within her, that delicate balance he had never seen before, and slowly but surely he surrendered himself to her, body and soul.
he travelled with her for many years, changing his name from mauricio jaime de luján to rafael adalfierri navarette as the times changed, though he kept it of spanish origin, taking an italian middle name to honour felicity, in his own way. at some point in their travels, they gave up human blood, their eyes fading from a brilliant red to a striking gold colour. he has sworn to stay with felicity for as long as he possibly can, his vow to her one he never intends to break.
