Personality:
Philosophical: Marcus is very quiet and likes to keep to himself. He does not like talking and only talks when necessary. Despite being one of the three leaders of the Volturi, he hardly speaks; normally he lets his co-leaders do all the speaking. He is taciturn – true, but that does not mean he does not know anything. He enjoys watching people and judging them in his mind. His thoughts are sharp like knives and when he does not comment about you, you can feel sure that he likes you, at least does not hate you. Once he speaks about someone, his words won’t be easy to hear.
Fair-minded: Marcus is impartial and not prejudiced. He does not like liars or sycophantic people. He judges people around him basing on their actions, not their words. What is wrong is wrong and no flattering can change it. He treats people exactly the same way they use to treat him: they are nice to him, he is nice to them. They help him, he will return the favor. They do goods to him, he means no harm to them. They hurt him, he will make them pay.
Apathetic: Didyme died and left him with a broken heart that cannot be healed. His heart grows colder everyday and he starts to live like a shadow: no cares, no worries. Nothing can surprise him anymore. Everything seems to be boring to him. All he thinks about is his dead wife. Marcus is always well aware of things happening around him but he pays no mind to them. People come and go – that is none of his business. He has joined the Volturi’s meeting, battles just because of the duties of a leader, not that he really cared about his own coven.
Callous: There is no room for love in heart ice-cold heart. Marcus lives for himself, not for his coven or anyone. He has no compassion for anyone, or anything. Never ask him for mercy if you have done something wrong to him because nothing you say can change his mind (and also because he wholeheartedly detests talkative people).

History ::[/i]
Hermes Marcus Joyeuse was born on May 25th, 1350 BC in Greece, to Eutropia and Nêutreus Joyeuse. He was the eldest child in the family and three years after his birth, a baby girl was born, and given the name Nerine. All Marcus remembers about his human life was that he lost his family in an epidemic disease. The whole village died and he was one of the lucky ones to have survived it. He does not remember who his creator was. He only knows that he was already a vampire and acquired the power to read the emotional ties between people when he opened his eyes. Marcus had traveled around the world after the transformation and fended for himself until he met Aro and Caius. Together, they formed the core of the Volturi – which is now the ancient royal family in the vampire world. Soon after that, Marcus had his eyes on Aro’s biological sister – Didyme, who was blessed with the ability of making people happy; then the two fell in love with each other. They remained in the Volturi for a long time. Nevertheless, Marcus and Didyme eventually became discontent with the Volturi, and planed on leaving. In order to prevent Marcus from leaving the Volturi, Aro, who pretended to give his blessing, killed Didyme because he was too integral to his plans to lose. Marcus never found out what Aro did to Didyme, and afterwards Aro had Chelsea use her ability to ensure Marcus remained loyal to the Volturi.
Ever since, Marcus started living a miserable life without Didyme. He became quiet, conservative and apathetic. Around 500 AD, the Volturi usurped control of the vampire world from the Romanian Coven; they started to act like the ruler of the vampire world and made laws which were to be upheld. They cruelly punished the law-breakers without any mercy. Carlisle came to stay with them for a while and his strange vegetarian lifestyle was extraordinarily hard to understand to the Volturi as well as most of vampires in the world. The Volturi tried to convince Carlisle to give up his lifestyle and live the life of a true vampire, but he ended up becoming discontent and left for the New World at last. Carlisle soon became the founder of the Olympic coven.
The conflict between the Volturi and the Olympic coven had been seeded when Edward Cullen came to ask the Volturi for death. The coincidental meeting with the human Bella Swan was the warning of a not-so-bright future for the Volturi. Marcus, with his power to read the emotional ties between people, was interested in the odd, likely impossible relationship between a vampire and a human; nevertheless, he did not make it obvious to anyone. After the meeting up with Isabella Swan, the Volturi never stopped updating information about the Cullens. Time flied and things had seemed to be fine until Irina Denali informed them that the Cullens had created an immortal child named Renesmee. Aro – the man of ambition – had always wanted to collect members from the Olympic coven (especially Edward and Alice due to their gifts); therefore, he believed it was a perfect chance to get his scheme up and running. The three leaders, along with their guards, paid a visit to Forks so as to “maintain the laws”. The Olympic coven had already gathered their supporters around the world to be their witnesses in the Renesmee trial. The confrontation almost led to a battle, which the Volturi was likely to lose due to Alice’s vision; nevertheless, in the end, it was confirmed that Renesmee was not an immortal child, but a hybrid, which was extremely rare and the Volturi had not been aware of. The case was dismissed due to the fact that the Cullens were proved to be innocent. The battle was avoided and Marcus left with his coven.
Marcus, as well as the rest of the Volturi, are both feared and respected throughout the vampire world as the guardians who keep the human world ignorant of the supernatural. He is also known to be respected in the human world as "Saint Marcus", the holy priest who drove all the vampires from Volterra. His national holiday, St. Marcus Day on the 19th of March, is celebrated each year by the people of Volterra. The legend most likely developed out the fact that the Volturi do not permit hunting within the walls of Volterra.

Marcus tapped his fingers on the mental throne he was sitting on. His dispirited eyes glared around the room, watching everyone do their jobs quietly. It was another day in the castle – quiet and boring. Sometimes he wondered what he was doing with his life. He could have been somewhere else, enjoying himself instead of remaining in this large, empty throne room and playing a mute statue while his brothers worked with the guards. He did have things to do and works to take care of. But he believed none of them was sitting still on the throne and glaring at people. If only Didyme had been there with him. They would have escaped to somewhere private and talked about whatever that made them happy. He missed her smile so much. He remembered seeing it every time he looked at her. Didyme had been a joyful woman – never stopped smiling. Flowers blossomed wherever she had passed by. She had warmed up so many hearts. And she had gone, for good. Marcus let out a sigh as he found himself in pain again when thinking of his wife. He should have buried that tragic past deep in his cold heart. He should have stopped thinking of her and accepted the fact that she would never come back. But he could not.
Quietly, he stood up and walked to the large wooden door. The guards separated so that he would be able to pass the crowd. Everyone tried to avoid eyeing him. Suddenly, a voice spoke up, which belonged to no other than Aro. Brother, where are you going? There were concerns in his voice, which Marcus found quiet sarcastic though he did not mean to feel that way. He turned to face Aro then answered shortly. Out of here.
